In the misty mountains of Niigata, where the air hums with tradition, a thousand mud ponds reflect the sky. This is the birthplace of Japanese koi—the koi capital of the world. Here, beauty, culture, and tradition intertwine, revealing the heart of an art form that has been perfected for generations.
For Fitz’s Fish Ponds, the journey to Japan is about more than acquiring koi—it’s about immersing ourselves in the heritage, culture, and artistry that make Japanese koi so extraordinary. It’s a pilgrimage into the world of master breeders, each a guardian of secrets passed down through time, ensuring that the koi they cultivate are true living masterpieces.
As we step into this world of timeless tradition and artistry, the crisp fall air carries whispers of history. We walk among the legendary breeders, witnessing their unparalleled dedication. In tranquil ponds and quiet greenhouses, treasures emerge—koi shimmering with unmatched beauty, their vibrant colors and patterns a testament to decades of devotion.
The anticipation of each harvest is palpable. Beneath the misty sky, the mud ponds stir to life, their secrets revealed with each careful sweep of the net. The breeders move with graceful precision, their expertise flowing like the water itself. In their hands, each koi emerges, nurtured by wisdom and time—a reflection of Japan’s commitment to excellence.
At the helm of these koi expeditions is Brian Fitzsimmons, known to most as Fitz. Since his first trip to Japan in 2013, he has been on a relentless pursuit to find and bring home the best koi in the world. Always armed with a net and a keen eye, Fitz is a familiar presence in the koi houses of Niigata.
Alongside him is AJ Mandell, FFP’s Director of Koi Sales. AJ is an expert at selecting top-tier koi and is a constant presence on every trip to Japan, ensuring customers back home have access to the finest selections.
Jim, a key member of FFP’s fish department, joined this trip for the first time. His hard work and deep koi knowledge make him a standout in the field.
Also experiencing Japan for the first time is Mike Milazzo, or “Fish Mike,” whose dedication to learning the art of koi was truly inspiring. He played a crucial role in assisting breeders during harvests and helping to transport koi with precision.
Ryan Cardillo, manager of the Green Brook store, is an OG of the Japan trips. Having been on nearly every journey with Fitz, he brings a deep love for Japan, its culture, and koi. Known as the nightlife manager of the group, he balances work and fun seamlessly.
And finally, Bebe, the media specialist behind the lens, captures the essence of these koi adventures and shares them with the world. While not often in front of the camera, Bebe’s perspective tells the story of koi in a way that brings the experience to life for koi enthusiasts everywhere.
Each day in Japan is a whirlwind of koi selection, breeder visits, and cultural immersion. From sunup until well past sundown, we make the most of every moment. Even on rainy days, the experience is nothing short of magical—because a rainy day in paradise is still paradise.
As quickly as the rain begins, it vanishes, leaving us refreshed and ready for the next adventure. The koi houses glow softly in the golden light of fall, their waters alive with shimmering hues. It’s a moment of harmony and renewal, where nature’s magic meets human dedication, filling the space with life, color, and the timeless elegance of the koi.
These trips are more than just business—they are about deepening relationships with legendary breeders, carefully selecting koi that meet the highest standards, and experiencing the culture and traditions that make Japanese koi so special.
For Fitz’s Fish Ponds, the journey to Japan is about bringing a piece of this craftsmanship and tradition back home. Every koi we select carries a story of excellence, passion, and dedication. From the mud ponds of Niigata to the FFP Farm and ultimately to your backyard, we are committed to bringing the world’s finest koi to you.
Join us in celebrating the beauty, tradition, and passion that define Japanese koi. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just beginning your journey, Fitz’s Fish Ponds is here to make your koi dreams come true.
